Starting a business in the heart of Europe
Slovakia is an attractive destination for foreigners who want to start a business in the European Union. One of the most common business structures is registering as a sole proprietor. The process is straightforward, and under certain conditions it allows you to obtain a residence permit.
Who can become a sole proprietor in Slovakia
A sole proprietor (Živnostník) can be any individual who meets the legal requirements.
Basic requirements
- A valid passport or an existing residence permit.
- No criminal record or legal restrictions.
- Necessary knowledge or qualifications for regulated professions.
- Ability to demonstrate sufficient income for living and business operation.
Steps for registering a sole proprietor
1. Preparing documents
- Copy of passport.
- Application to the Živnostenský register.
- Business address.
- List of intended business activities.
2. Registration in the Trade Register
The application is submitted via www.slovensko.sk or in person. Registration takes 1–3 business days. After approval, the entrepreneur receives an IČO.
3. Registration with the tax authorities
Registration with the Daňový úrad is required to obtain a DIČ. If annual turnover exceeds 49,790 EUR, VAT registration becomes mandatory.
4. Obtaining necessary licenses
Most business activities do not require additional licenses. However, medical, legal, educational and other regulated professions require specific authorization.
Obtaining a residence permit as a sole proprietor
After registering as a business owner, you may apply for a temporary residence permit. You must demonstrate the viability of your business and sufficient financial means.

- Application for a residence permit through the city office or immigration police.
- Business registration documents (IČO, DIČ).
- Proof of sufficient financial resources.
After approximately five years of business activity, you may apply for permanent residence.
