Consular registration is a complex set of measures carried out by Ukraine’s diplomatic missions abroad to collect and systematize accounting information about the residence or stay of Ukrainian citizens outside the country for subsequent inclusion in the relevant databases of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
Consular registration can take the form of either temporary or permanent registration.
Temporary consular registration involves registering the place of residence or stay of a Ukrainian citizen abroad who is there on legal but temporary grounds. Usually, this status is granted for a period of one year with the possibility of extension up to five years.
In turn, permanent consular registration involves registering data about a Ukrainian citizen abroad who has officially completed the procedure for moving to a permanent residence abroad or has obtained a residence permit through the Embassy of Ukraine in the respective country. The term of this registration is unlimited, but every 10 years, one must update their data at the Embassy of Ukraine.
According to the legislation, consular registration guarantees the right of Ukrainian citizens to legality and protection of their interests abroad, providing them with necessary support and assistance when needed.
