One of the important aspects for foreigners staying in Ukraine is the possibility of extending their stay for various reasons.
The main criteria for extending the stay are defined by the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
Depending on the grounds for staying in Ukraine, the extension of the stay is divided according to the type of visa with which a foreigner entered:
- For a short-term visa (type “C”) or for countries with a visa-free regime, the period of stay can be extended up to 180 days from the last entry into Ukraine. Grounds for such an extension include medical treatment, pregnancy or childbirth, caring for a sick family member, processing inheritance, applying for an immigration permit or Ukrainian citizenship, as well as staying in Ukraine as a correspondent for a foreign media outlet. To obtain an extension, documentary evidence of each of these grounds is required.
- For a transit visa (type “B”) in case of an unforeseen stop in Ukraine due to extraordinary circumstances (such as natural disasters, illness, vehicle repair), provided that there are relevant documents. The extension period is determined by the time needed to resolve such circumstances.
- For a long-term visa (type “D”) if the person has not obtained a permanent or temporary residence permit within the visa validity period. This extension is granted for a period of no more than one month.
What documents are required?
- Application (to be submitted electronically);
- Foreigner’s passport and its notarized translation;
- Host party’s passport (for legal entities – director’s passport; extract from the register of legal entities; copy of the protocol, order, or decree appointing responsible persons);
- Document confirming sufficient financial support;
- Document of property ownership for the accommodation where the foreigner will reside;
- Property owner’s passport;
- Photo of the foreign citizen;
- Receipt for payment of the state fee.
